ABOUT TIMOTHY EHLEN

Timothy Ehlen is an acclaimed concert pianist known for his masterful performances, extensive recordings, and dedication to teaching. He is recognized internationally as a Steinway Artist.


Performance Career
Ehlen’s performance career spans the United States, Europe, and Asia. He gained international recognition after winning the World Piano Competition in 1987, followed by a critically acclaimed debut at Lincoln Center in 1988. His playing has been compared to legendary artists such as Robert Casadesus and Walter Gieseking. He has garnered special praise for his elegant technique and interpretation of 18 th century compositions as well as for his work with music of the Impressionist era.


He has performed at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall, Weill Hall, and the Krannert Centerthe Performing Arts, and has appeared with numerous orchestras including the Cleveland Orchestra. His repertoire includes works by Beethoven, Brahms, Ravel, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, and Liszt, demonstrating virtuosity and emotional depth, particularly as highlighted in his performances of Brahms’ late piano pieces and Ravel’s piano concerto.


Recordings
Timothy has an extensive discography with recordings of the complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas for the Azica label, which have received high critical praise for their depth and insight. Other recordings include Schumann’s Fantasie, Brahms’ late character pieces. His recordings have appeared on various labels including Crystal, Omnibus, and Felia Mundi.


Teaching and Master Classes
In addition to performance, Ehlen is a distinguished educator, currently serving as a professor of piano at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He actively mentors young musicians through master classes and workshops at major universities and conservatories across the United States, Korea, and China. He has taught at summer festivals such as the Chautauqua Music Festival, Vienna International Piano Academy, and Brevard Music Institute
